When it Seems as if We Can’t Go On

A warm blast of air hits her face
As she walks through the darkened place.
Groggily wiping the sleep from her eyes,
She yawns and approaches immigration lines.
The setting Bolivia, the hour nearly three
In the morning, everyone is sleepy.
After some mix-up they find their way through
While the fellow behind them is all in a stew.
Loud voices, wrong papers, add to the mess
But at last all is quiet, they get a small rest
Sprawled on a floor, bags and luggage around
Airport personnel scurrying round.

Back to the warm air to search for a face
Someone to take them from this airport place.
There she is, the contact, she welcomes with a smile
Then leads to her uncle, " In two cars we will pile."
The ride's an adventure, through the city and town
Getting stuck in the mud and getting pulled out.
At last they arrive at a little brick church
Here's where they will stay and where they will work.
Exhausted they eat, and then go to bed.
"Can I actually do this?" Goes through her head.
"God help me, this looks so hard to do,
But I'm trusting you to see me through."
Many hours of sleep later, around 3 P.M.
The outlook slightly brighter, she wakens again.
Asking for prayers from friends back home
She determines to trust God whatever may come.

And do the things come? Oh yes, yes they do.
But she feels God with her, He's seeing her through.
There are moments of crying and moments of song
Of asking hard questions, and can we go on?
But God sees the struggles, He sees the joys
He sees the love given the girls and the boys
And so at the times when the strain seems too bad
He gives ways of escape, to make them more glad.
Time alone, ice cream, afternoon walks
Moto rides, singing, late night talks.

He uses them in their weakness, makes beauty from dust
Shows them He is the one they truly can trust.
They're His hands and His feet to the children around
Showing God's love e'en though hardships abound.
And then as a final gift He provides a way
For these girls to see more of His love every day.

A road trip, 10 hours, more chances to see
What their great God is doing in this country.
Over hills and mountains, He brightens the days
With adventures and encounters which cause them to say
Can anything better happen yet?

He makes a way through the trials we face.
He shows us His love and His wonderful grace.
Sometimes we can't see it, but need others to show
How God is still with us as onward we go.
There are moments it seems like we cannot go on
We just have to trust that He who called us is strong.
He sees the big picture there's a reason we're here.
In the good and the hard, we can trust that He's near.
We did not choose Him, it is not our plan
He called us and chose us, and He'll hold our hand.

Last October my team and I went to Bolivia for three weeks. The above account is a very brief description of my time there. This is all from my perspective and I know each of us girls could share our own Bolivia story and feel different about the things that happened there.  Please pray for the pastor who we were with in Bolivia. He is working to keep two churches alive and was a tremendous example to me of generous living.

May you feel God's love in your life this week no matter what you're facing.
Keep your eyes open to the ways God cares for your needs. He loves you a lot. 💓

This poem was an honor to read, Vaness. It is both impressive and accurate and it made me a little teary as I read. As hard as it was, this trip was a gift. ❤️
